Preparation for Lesson 1
If you want to take full advantage of this lesson and obtain the expected results, you should learn more about the following –
- Rules and regulations of the road
- The car which you will use when taking lessons as well as its controls
- Information regarding safety checks for adequate preparation
In addition, you should engage in regular practice with your ADI or Sponsor or both so you will learn how to use the primary controls of the vehicles including the proper use of brakes and wheel. You should also practice the use of secondary controls like the lights and windscreen wipers. Furthermore, you should also learn how to drive in quiet and safe conditions as well as practice basic maneuvers including stopping and starting the vehicle.
Before you begin the first EDT lesson, you should practice the basics for at least three hours.
Objectives of Lesson 1
Your ADI will make sure that on your first EDT lesson you will be able to:
- Carry out suitable pre-start vehicle checks such as the roadworthiness of your vehicle
- Understand what the primary and secondary controls are and how to use them properly
Minimum Coverage of Lesson 1
The minimum coverage of the first EDT lesson includes –
- Proper usage of primary and secondary controls
- Car safety
- Roadworthiness of the vehicle
Expected Results for Lesson 1
Use of Primary and Secondary Controls
At the conclusion of the first EDT lesson, you are expected to be familiar and adequately informed about the prestart vehicle checks and know where they are located as well as their function. The following are the parts you should be familiar with at the end of the first EDT lesson:
- Accelerator and clutch
- Footbrake
- Front and rear demisters
- Gears
- Handbrake/Parking brake
- Horn
- Lights and reflectors
- Steering
- Windows, doors and locks
- Windscreen wipers and washers
You are also expected to know how to explain the reason why the correct and proper use of these parts is important to help you stay safe on the road as well as other road users.
Vehicle Safety
With regards to vehicle safety, you are expected to explain the specific routine safety checks done on the vehicle as well as demonstrate them. In addition, it is also important that you understand the primary reasons why a vehicle may not be roadworthy. You are also expected to know what the safety and legal consequences of driving vehicles that are not roadworthy as well as explain the primary points you have to take into account when doing safety checks.
Apart from these, you are also expected to fluently explain the environmental effects associated with the proper use of primary and secondary controls. You should also be able to plan your journey and know where you can find relevant and accurate journey information.
Preparation for Lesson 2
In order to achieve the objectives of EDT Lesson 2, you must complete EDT Lesson 1.
Practice Makes Perfect
If you want to feel confident about achieving the required objectives, you should read and understand the expected outcomes of the lesson. You should also practice at least three hours with your ADI or Sponsor or both and have made necessary research and study.
It is important that you practice particularly the proper use of primary and secondary controls including carrying out the routine safety checks.
Furthermore, you should also read and understand the Rules of the Road section, which you have to deal with specifically – correct positioning.
If your ADI give you any feedback, you should review and act on it at the end of your previous EDT lesson.
